History

Bringing together the strength of brotherhood and community, we believe in our ability to make a positive impact, define our future, and change the world.

THE FRATERNITY

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was organized Friday Evening November 17, 1911 in the office of Ernest Everett Just, professor of Biology at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The organizers were three juniors in the College of Liberal Arts. Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman. They visioned a creative, idealistic national organization that would unite thousands or young men in aim, thought and loyalty.

They selected the name of the organization, Omega Psi Phi. Represented by three Greek letters which mean, "Friendship is Essential to the Soul". The meaning of the letters was adopted as the Fraternity's motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as the fraternity's cardinal principles.

At the second fraternity meeting, Edgar A. Love was selected the first Grand Basileus, with Oscar J. Cooper elected Grand Keeper of Finance and Frank Coleman elected as Grand Keeper of Records and Seal. Shortly thereafter, 14 undergraduate men were inducted and constituted the first (Alpha) permanent chapter, the first national Greek-Letter fraternity to be organized at a black institution for higher learning. Despite initial faculty opposition, it gained acceptance and blazed the trail for other fraternities and sororities that were destined to follow. The Fraternity was formally incorporated October 28, 1914 by the United States Congress under the laws governing the District of Columbia.

The Coalition

The Houston Area Coalition of Chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was established in September 1988 through the leadership of members from two Houston graduate chapters. Under the direction of Bro. Raymond Bourgeois (Basileus of Nu Phi) and Bro. Nelson Anthony (Basileus of Rho Beta Beta), the Coalition was formed to collaboratively execute the Fraternity’s mandated programs and expand community impact.

Our Foundation

The Coalition’s first joint effort was the Founders’ Day Banquet and Achievement Week Program. Building on that momentum, the chapters launched the Annual UNCF Walk-A-Thon—an initiative that began with family, friends, and fraternity members and has since grown into a major community event, now engaging over 1,000 volunteers from corporations, civic organizations, churches, and the Pan-Hellenic Council.

What We Do

The Coalition delivers impactful programs that support education, community service, and civic engagement, including:

• Regional Talent Hunt Competition for high school students

• Annual STEM (STEAM) Programs to inspire youth in science and technology

• Blood Donation Drives contributing hundreds of units annually

• Voter Registration & Mobilization Efforts

• REAL MEN READ Program partnerships

• Volunteer Service in Public Schools

Through strong partnerships with local organizations, the Coalition continues to make a meaningful difference across the Greater Houston community.

Our Impact

The Coalition’s commitment to service has earned consistent recognition from city and county leadership across the communities and campuses we serve. When the Greater Houston community is in need, Omega stands ready to respond.

Growing Together

After years of successful collaboration, additional graduate chapters joined the Coalition, including:

• Theta Chi (Prairie View)

• Rho Xi (Freeport)

Together, we serve senior citizens, youth, and underserved populations throughout the Houston metropolitan area and surrounding communities.

Our Membership

Today, the Coalition is composed of 12 chapters, including 7 graduate chapters and 5 undergraduate chapters, working together to serve the Greater Houston area. For over 30 years, the Houston Area Coalition of Omegamen has remained committed to addressing the needs of the community—particularly within the African American community—through service, leadership, and partnership.
